Roger Stone, a confidant of President Donald Trump and former campaign adviser, was arrested Friday morning and charged with lying to Congress and obstruction. Why Stone did not do the same thing is not exactly clear, although apparently he anxious that it would make Trump look bad by implying that his former adviser had done something criminal.
"Roger and Donald Trump have had an on-again, off-again relationship over the years", he said.
But days later Mr Stone wrote a piece for Business Insider in support of the Republican candidate, titled "The man who just resigned from Donald Trump's campaign explains how Trump can still win".
"It is unproven and it is a claim", Stone said.
Stone was only officially on the president's campaign for a few months, but would spin reporters, peddle conspiracies and, according to prosecutors, collaborate with WikiLeaks to release damaging information about Hillary Clinton in the final stretch of the 2016 campaign. What about Hillary to Federal Bureau of Investigation and her 33,000 deleted Emails?
The charging documents included new details about the alleged activities of Trump aides, including an incident in which a senior campaign official "was directed to contact Stone about any additional releases and what other damaging information Organisation 1 had regarding the Clinton Campaign". The indictment includes an email from Corsi to Stone in which Corsi claims knowledge of what "hackers" attacking the election intend to do and recommends coordinated action the Trump campaign should take - which the campaign subsequently took. The indictment does not allege that Stone had any direct contact with WikiLeaks, let alone the hackers.
In a tweet Friday, Podesta turned Stone's words against him, writing that it was now "Roger's time in the barrel".
On the same day has he was arrested in Florida, Trump ally Roger Stone sat down with CNN's Chris Cuomo to talk about the events of the day and what the now indicted Stone thinks may happen next. Stone responded that "Organization 1" would release "a load every week going forward".
Julian Assange speaks to the media from the balcony of the Embassy Of Ecuador in London on May 19, 2017.
In 2016, U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russian Federation had tried to turn the election in Mr Trump's favour through state-sponsored cyber-attacks and fake news stories spread on social media.
In 1988, as Reagan's second term was winding down, Stone arranged for Trump to travel to New Hampshire, site of the nation's first presidential primary, to address a crowd of 2,000 well-wishers.
The 66-year-old political operative, the subject of the Netflix documentary "Get Me Roger Stone" released two years ago, has been working on Republican politicians' campaigns for almost five decades.
The text message said "well done".
"There is no circumstance whatsoever under which I will bear false witness against the president nor will I make up lies to ease the pressure on myself", Stone said after being released. The latter has also been indicted by Robert Mueller.
Credico's denial over the existence of a "back channel" has apparently infuriated Stone. The vicious, profanity-laden email apparently refers to Credico's dog, Bianca.
