It wants someone to buy about 500 of its stores and the Kenmore appliance brand to keep Sears and Kmart open for business.

Any turnaround won't come soon enough for some outlets, with Sears telling employees on December 28 that it's closing 80 Sears and Kmart stores in late March 2019.

All locations included in the release will be closed by late March 2019, with liquidation sales beginning in as little as two weeks.

The closings are part of the company's "processes to accelerate its strategic transformation and facilitate its financial restructuring".

Sears stores in Novi and Muskegon will close in MI. "Customers can use the store locator function on our web sites to find the location of their nearest Kmart and Sears stores". Lampert and his hedge fund, ESL Investments Inc., also didn't respond to messages.

CNBC reported earlier this month that the retailer was weighing closing 50 to 80 more stores, in a fight to stay alive.

Sears is not indicating how many employees are affected by the closure.

When the Hoffman Estates, Illinois-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October, it had 687 stores and 68,000 workers.

In a court filing, the creditors' attorney called Sears' plan to become profitable "nothing more than wishful thinking " and "an unjustified and foolhardy gamble with other people's money". Last week, US Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Drain gave initial approval for the $60 million sale of Sears' home improvement business to Service.com.
