Rap star Kendrick Lamar leads Grammy nominations with 8


Beyonce and Jay-Z, billed as The Carters, as well Ariana Grande, didn't earn any of the big nominations.

Nominees from select GRAMMY categories will be revealed live from New York City on Friday, Dec. 7 at 8:30 a.m. ET/5:30 a.m. PT.

Mendes scored two nominations for song of the year for "In My Blood" and best pop vocal album.

He will compete with Lamar in the hotly-contested Album of the Year category with his chart-topping release Scorpion.

Awards season is soon to be on the horizon, and now that nominations for the 61st annual Grammy Awards have finally arrived, the industry is about to be flooded with non-stop campaigning. The Nanaimo, B.C. singer and Bennett's rendition of 'S Wonderful is up for best pop duo performance, while their Love is Here to Stay is in the running for traditional pop vocal album. J. Cole was also nominated for Best R&B Song, thanks to his contribution to Miguel's "Come Through And Chill". That's because her two Grammy nods past year disqualify her from a best new artist award.

The other rap categories have a wide range of choices as well.

Rap as a genre has dominated the nominations, with five of the top six most-nominated artists being rappers.

In May, the head of the Recording Academy - which includes more than 13,000 music professionals - said he would step aside when his contract expires near year, amid outrage after he said women artists should "step up". Justin Timberlake, whose "Man of the Woods" albums flopped earlier this year, picked up a nod for "Say Something", his collaboration with Chris Stapleton.

The "Panther" nomination would give Lamar a chance to win album of the year after losing three times. Childish Gambino's "Feels Like Summer" is up for Best R&B Song. However, despite those accolades, Rich The Kid did not receive a single Grammy nomination for either of those songs.

The 28-year-old country singer received five nominations this year, but perhaps the most notable one, according to People, is for "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters".

"[.] I didn't even drop an album", she added.
