Apple finally launches a new MacBook Air with Retina display

The rumors were true; Apple has just unveiled an all new MacBook Air and it looks like well, a MacBook Air. It's late to the game, sure, but now that it is here and with the holiday season upon us, Apple is likely going to sell a lot of these in the coming months.

There's also a T2 Security Chip, same as the iMac Pro and MacBook Pro, which handles all the secure boot, encryption, and controller other words, Apple is offloading everything from Intel that it can, so MacBook Air performs better than what any similar specced machines have any right to.

Speaking of SSDs, you get up to 1.5TB of storage on the new MacBook air, and up to 16GB of RAM. That's the new Air (top) with my 13-inch MacBook Pro (bottom). Around the edges of the notebook, prospective owners will find a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports that double as power inputs, as well as a good old headphone jack. The new model is 17% smaller than the previous Air, and 10% thinner at just 15.6mm. On the inside, the Mac mini has up to six-core processors, with system memory of up to 64GB and internal flash storage of a maximum of 2TB. "So it's time for a new MacBook Air, one that takes the MacBook Air experience even further in the areas that are important to our customers".

How different is the new MacBook Air from the previous version?

But the awesome force touch trackpad is now on the MacBook Air. Apple also claims "all-day battery life" with up to 13 hours of iTunes movie playback or 12 hours of web browsing.

Apple is now producing its MacBook Airs from 100 percent recycled aluminum, making it the greenest Mac ever.

In terms of build quality, the Air hits the typical standard most expect from Apple despite the fact that the computer is now manufactured from 100 percent recycled aluminum. You get a 3 generation butterfly keyboard which is the same as the ones you get in the current generation MacBook Pro, which means they're quieter and technically less prone to failure. Apple says the display now contains "over 4 million pixels" and "48% more color" compared to the prior model. The new MacBook Air also includes Force Touch trackpad, which delivers pressure-sensing capabilities and haptic feedback, and is 20 per cent larger than on the previous generation MacBook Ai. The 13.3-inch model is the same width as the Air and technically narrower since it doesn't taper.

The new MacBook Air comes in Gold, Space Grey and Silver colour options. Like we saw with iPhone and the price tag creeping up to the $1k point, if you want Apple's latest then you need to open your wallet wider.
