Now boxing fans will wait and see whether Joshua and WBC champion Deontay Wilder can come to terms on a bout for the undisputed heavyweight title.
There has been some question marks surrounding this bout with several former professionals questioning whether Joshua would choose to face Povetkin.
"I'm very calm, I feel no pressure and am very happy about this fight taking place so soon". Joshua landed a few good uppercuts and left hooks and likely took the round with his accurate punching.
"Joshua's a real world champion, we will go away now and try and make a fight with Wilder".
"Povetkin is a very tough challenger and he proved it tonight". Either way, Joshua is scheduled to have another fight at Wembley Stadium on April 13, 2019, but the opponent has not been decided. Povetkin'scareer has been on a bit of an up-and-down in the recent past as failed drug tests in 2016 and 2017 kept him out of scheduled matches against Deontay Wilder and Bermane Stiverne, respectively.
Povetkin, 39, knew this was most likely his last shot after being floored four times in a unanimous points loss to Wladimir Klitschko five years ago. Joshua may have sustained a broken nose. And if it is not Wilder next up, Joshua could find himself facing the 27-0 Tyson Fury after Povetkin. Povetkin was aggressive and tried to hurt Joshua with short right hands, but often landed on the guard of Joshua or swung at air.
Povetkin again rocked Joshua with a short left hook in the third round, after he had landed a big overhand right, and the champion looked nervous.
Who is the better coach, Mourinho or Conte?
The rain fell steadily at Wembley all evening, but it was the shower of punches throughout the seven rounds took centre stage in the main event of the evening and Joshua fans would've been anxious with Povetkin impressing in the first couple of rounds, visibly hurting the 28-year-old in the opening round.
While Joshua would prefer Wilder, his promoter Eddie Hearn conceded it was most likely going to be Whyte who steps in the ring with his fighter next.
