Landing a major political upset, 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez now finds herself in a bid to become the next representative from NY, after defeating U.S. Rep.
Last night, the 14th congressional district of NY saw one of the largest surprises in the state's congressional primary history, as a 28-year-old Latina woman, named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, defeated incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, who had previously held his congressional seat for 10 terms.
Shapiro said she is a member of the "howling at the moon branch of the Democratic Party" that "throws out radical proposals" and then claims "moral clarity lies in making proposals that are completely untenable and never will be paid for".
In Queens, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is challenging Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY), who has served in the House since 1999 and who is widely considered as a possible next Speaker should Democrats take back the House.
Her stunning victory was no surprise to those who knew Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during her years as a student at Boston University.
Mr Crowley congratulated Ms Ocasio-Cortez on her victory.
Affirming that she would support the impeachment of President Donald Trump, Ocasio-Cortez cited, "serious violations of the emoluments clause, among other very large concerns".
"Millennials - they think of us as punk kids, but we're in our late twenties, we're in our thirties, and we're the ones that are going to have to deal with climate change, with automation, with a changing economy", she told hosts, ABC News' chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl and political director Rick Klein. Cynthia Nixon and Zephyr Teachout were Ocasio-Cortez's highest profile local supporters.
"You have given this country hope, you have given this country proof that when you knock on your neighbor's door, when you come to them with love, when you let them know that no matter your stance, you are there for them - that we can make change", she said. Instead, she managed to raise more small donations than any other congressional candidate in NY, which allowed her to campaign sincerely on a platform for economic justice, while exposing Crowley as a centrist who does not represent real change.
"This caucus is always assessing itself", he said. "Alexandria and I are joining together to take on the old boys club, rejecting corporate money and run people-powered campaigns that envision a progressive NY that serves the many, not just the few who can afford to buy influence". "It's unfortunate, but I believe that we are at that point".
Jealous faces a tough general election in November against incumbent Republican governor Larry Hogan. A socialist was elected in a NY primary, becoming the Democratic Party's candidate for Congress. California Democrat Ro Khanna did endorse her-and her opponent!
"We define a mass shooting to be an incident of violence in which 4 or more people are shot", the website says.
