Sheriff: Slain Kansas deputy identified

Rohrer had been with the sheriff's department for seven years.

He said the shooting suspect was critically injured in the shooting and is now in surgery.

Authorities say they are not searching for any other suspects at this time. The investigation into the shooting is continuing.

Both officers are deputies with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office.

Terry Zeigler, chief of the KCKPD, told the paper the deputies were transporting the inmate from the jail, which is across the street. This happened in a transport bay, sources say the inmate got a hold of a deputy's firearm.

FOX4 reported that this was the fourth officer-related shooting in the past three years in Kansas City. Fielder's pending cases in both counties explain why he was being transported Friday when he allegedly killed deputies Rohrer and King.

Additional information was not released.

Details of what led to the shooting have not been released. In the other incident, a standoff ended when a sword-wielding woman who fled from police later was shot after attempts to negotiate peacefully proved unsuccessful.

Colón earlier said he was "very confident (the shooting) was a last-resort situation to ensure the safety of the public".

The courthouse is located at 710 N Seventh Street.

Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer said in a statement he was "saddened" by the news. He offered a moment of silence for the deputies after he finished his speech at the event.

Ruth and I will be praying for the victims and their families, as well as all our law enforcement officers and other first responders as we come together as a community to mourn this horrific tragedy.

Officers were called to a residential area of the city's north side.

"Today's bad events in Kansas City bitterly remind us once again of the dangers and sacrifices faced every day by law enforcement officers throughout our state and nation". Capt. Robert Melton was slain in July while searching for a suspect in a drive-by shooting.

Part of what makes the shooting so shocking is that it happened in what would normally be a safe, secure location for police.

Wyandotte County sheriff's spokeswoman Maj.

The surviving deputy, a female, remains in critical condition, according to Bailiff.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department is heading the investigation. Police Officer Zac Blair said authorities are reviewing surveillance video.
