According to the Hollywood Reporter, the US Attorney's office for the Eastern District of NY alleges that NXIVM recruited slaves into what was called "a woman's only organization" that would help empower them. Raniere, 57, allegedly blackmailed women into becoming sex slaves and branded their skin with his and Mack's initials.
Although she is accused of abusing members below her in cult ranking, Mack also operated as Raniere's personal slave, according to the criminal complaint.
The Smallville actress, along with NXIVM cult leader Keith Raniere, also known as "Vanguard", was charged with sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and forced labor conspiracy, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office Eastern District of NY.
Mack pleaded not guilty to the charges against her when arraigned on Friday afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Cheryl Pollak.
Mack helped force the women to have sex with Raniere and received financial and other benefits from Raniere in exchange, prosecutors said. According to former members of the cult, Mack operated as his right-hand woman and served as the leader after his arrest.
Variety reports that a sex cult arose within the group, which was based in Albany, that saw women being branded in the pelvic area with Raniere's initials. The women were allegedly naked and required to be appear on film while they were branded. He also said that Mack and her "Smallville" co-star, Kristin Kreuk, were used as "poster girls for normalizing the group".
An earlier criminal complaint alleges that women were expected to have sex with Raniere and do menial chores for masters.
Raniere was arrested on March 25 at a villa near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on charges of sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and forced labor conspiracy.
Both Raniere and Mack face a minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum of life in prison. There is now no set date for Raniere's arraignment.
