The activist and New York City native announced plans on social media Monday to run for governor against incumbent Andrew Cuomo.

Greenberg, who spoke just before Nixon announced her candidacy, says the real campaigning has not yet begun, though, and when that happens, the numbers could change.

Nixon announced her debut in the world of politics with a two-minute video on her social media platforms, where she declared: 'I love NY and today I'm announcing my candidacy for governor'.

If she were to win the state's highest office, Nixon would be New York's first female and first openly gay governor. In a campaign video, the public education advocate said, "We want our government to work again".

DeFrancisco said he will battle for committee votes over the next two months as New York Republicans become more familiar with both candidates.

During an appearance on the Today show a year ago, she called out New York's current governor, Andrew Cuomo for inequities in school funding.

Mirandas of the world united to cheer on Nixon and remember her character Miranda Hobbes, the high-powered attorney on HBO's Sex and the City.

The video, which shows Nixon, 51, at home with her wife, Christine Marinoni, and their young son Max, also addresses income inequality.

Ken Sunshine, a public relations consultant and a friend of Cuomo's, said he didn't see how Nixon could credibly challenge Cuomo from the left.

Nixon will make education her top priority, and has in the past put the blame on Cuomo for the divide between the state's richest and poorest schools, according to People. It can't just be business as usual anymore. "There will be people who run. But if Washington is a swamp, then Albany is a cesspool", Nixon says on her newly-minted "Cynthia for New York" site.

At one point, there is footage of her walking down an NYC street with her voice-over: "I love NY".

The three in the Senate call for requiring half of school lock down drills be "active shooter" drills, providing school resource officers at schools outside New York City, and assigning NYPD officers to city schools. She also was in the two franchise movies that followed.
