Also announced Tuesday, former spokeswoman Katrina Pierson was hired by the campaign as a senior adviser.

While it's unclear why McEntee was sacked, the Journal reported that there may have been something in McEntee's background check.

President Trump's personal assistant was let go on Monday - escorted from the White House without being allowed to get his coat, according to reports.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to comment saying, "We don't comment on personnel issues".

In what now serves as a sort of time capsule of 2011, McEntee spent the video spanning the UConn campus, hitting various trick shots while M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" and MGMT's "Kids" blared in the background. He was one of a shrinking group of campaign aides still working in the turbulent West Wing.

For Trump, the absence of McEntee strips away another of the handful of close associates who have constantly been by his side as he made the transition from real estate mogul to politician.

McEntee is just the latest aide to leave the White House amid issues with his security clearance, after White House chief of staff John Kelly enacted a series of reforms following the scandal involving disgraced White House staff secretary Rob Porter.

Mr McEntee, who was most recently seen travelling to Pennsylvania with Mr Trump for a rally on Saturday, was expected to join the president in California on Tuesday before his sacking.

Even though McEntee is reportedly being under investigation for financial crimes, the Trump presidential campaign announced on Tuesday morning that it would hire him to help with the president's reelection efforts in 2020. "John to promote the President's growing portfolio of achievements across the country".
