Mets to sign Jason Vargas

Turns out, the New York Mets were ready and willing to spend this winter.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical and had not been announced.'s Anthony DiComo reported the deal is worth $16 million over two seasons and includes a club option for the 2020 season.

Vargas, who made the All-Star team a year ago, was 18-11 with a 4.16 ERA but suffered a noticeable drop after the break.

This will be Vargas' second stint with the Mets. Center fielder Lorenzo Cain signed a five-year, $80 million contract last month with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Mets aren't expected to make a ton of noise this year, but they've had a knack for posting a solid rotation in recent years and hopefully Vargas will impress in NY. But the veteran appeared to be in good form for much of the 2017 season.

"I barely pitched in 2 ¹/₂ years", Wheeler said. Bruce has played solidly these last two seasons, so for an AAV of $13 million, it seemed like a steal to get him to come back to Queens.

Vargas would give the Mets another accomplished starter, this one a soft-tossing lefty to go with all their power arms.

Vargas led the AL in wins with 18 and made the All-Star Game previous year.

Before getting injured, Vargas was 5-2 with a 3.98 ERA in nine starts for the 2015 Royals team that beat the Mets in the World Series.

Working with current Mets pitching coach Dave Eiland during his time with the Kansas City Royals, Vargas received his first All-Star nod in 2017, leading the American League with 18 wins (18-11 record) with a 4.16 ERA.

The left-hander made two starts for the Mets in 2007, going 0-1 with a 12.19 ERA.
