The Shape of Water, a low-budget fantasy about a mute janitor who falls in love with an imprisoned sea creature, became 2017's most decorated film on Tuesday, receiving 13 nominations from Oscar voters, one less than the record for the most in Academy Awards history.
Then Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri began winning some major awards, especially the Golden Globe for Best Picture, Drama, and the SAG Award for Best Ensemble, making it a putative frontrunner.
Though all of the front-runners - Frances McDormand ("Three Billboards"), Gary Oldman ("Darkest Hour"), Allison Janney ("I, Tonya"), Sam Rockwell ("Three Billboards") - landed their expected nominations, there were surprises. With Gerwig's Directors Guild nomination and her Critics' Choice Awards nomination for this film - which is her solo directorial debut by the way - her chances are definitely good for the win.
The World War II epic drama Dunkirk, starring Harry Potter's Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, Kenneth Branagh received eight Academy Awards nominations including Best Director, Best Film and Sound Editing, Best Original Score and competition for Darkest Hour in the Best Picture category.
The category's other nominees were a retiring veteran - Daniel Day-Lewis for what he's said is his final performance (Phantom Thread) - and a pair of breakouts: Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) and "Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out)".

Each film has outscored only one or two previous best picture winners, so it's still super premature to pick a favorite in this category. But the Academy of Arts and Sciences - which gives out the awards - gets it wrong all the time.
No actors of color were nominated in the four acting categories in 2015 or 2016, sparking the #OscarsSoWhite movement in an effort to diversify The Academy, as well as the award show.
Jordan Peele's socially conscious horror/thriller got noms for Best Director, Lead Actor (Daniel Kaluuya), Original Screenplay, and Best Picture! While quite a few figures have been simultaneously nominated for both acting and screenplay (take a bow, Emma Thompson), Blige is the first person to receive nominations for acting and songwriting in the same year.
Roger Deakins has stoically clapped the best cinematographer victor 13 times now, after being nominated multiple times without a win.
"I am so delighted for us all".
