Texans DC Mike Vrabel interviews for Titans' vacancy

Rams offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur interviewed for the Titans head coaching vacancy, Tennessee announced on Friday.

While previous head coach Mike Mularkey was a great leader, he often struggled with the latter half of that description.

"We want to build a culture around winning, competitiveness and toughness", Vrabel said. He has also had roles as an offensive assistant at Boston College and Temple.

If Day is hired, it would be a huge get for Vrabel's staff as he looks for a strong offensive mind to compliment his defensive nature. He retired after the 2010 season and immediately took a job as the linebacker coach at Ohio State, his alma mater. "Everything we do is going to be geared toward winning and being physical". He won three Super Bowls and was in New England at the same time that Titans general manager John Robinson was in the Patriots' personnel department.

Vrabel spent the last four years with Houston, first as a linebackers coach and most recently running the Texans defense.

Vrabel is coming off his first season as defensive coordinator for the Texans. What message does Vrabel's hire send about the Titans' consideration of Mariota's future, as the young QB heads into a crucial fourth year and the team enters a crucial period of contractual decision making with respect to an extension for Mariota?

Teams were trying to lure him away last season to run their defenses, but Vrabel remained.

Vrabel's long career and ability to contribute in all three phases of the game made him an intriguing coaching candidate the minute he retired in 2011. "We want to prepare our players so they know what to do, which will allow them to play fast and aggressive". Throughout his football career, he has played for, been mentored by and coached with successful teams and organizations.

The Titans finished the 2017-18 regular season with a 9-7 record before edging the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild card round of the playoffs.

Just hours after interviewing Vrabel the team completed another interview with Carolina Panthers Defensive Coordinator Steve Wilks. Robinson has done a very good job rebuilding this Titans roster in his two years as GM.
