"Then he suffered an injury during the Georgia Tech game", Swinney said.

One of the best seasons for a rookie quarterback in recent memory is likely derailed because of a serious knee injury suffered in practice on Wednesday. Players like Robert Griffin III immediately spring to mind.

In comments distributed by the Clemson program (h/t College Football Talk), Swinney said he spoke with Watson and "we are disappointed".

"Look back in life to when you faced adversity and thought you would not overcome it, and then you did".

As a freshman with the Tigers, Watson tore his left ACL towards the end of the season but was still able to play on it and helped lead Clemson to a win over SC.

Swinney also noted the silver lining. He also was named the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Month for October. It would have been so much worse if it happened in training camp.

"This is so similar to the 2014 season, his freshman year at Clemson".

Watson threw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns; he did have three interceptions, though one came on a late desperation heave as he was trying to get his team one last score. He's only completed 58.1 percent of his passes along with six touchdowns, eight touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 72.8 during his career. After the rookie's injury, Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham, who's also out for the season due to an injury, chose to send a motivational text to Watson. "His work ethic and drive are incredible".
