Microsoft Adds Surface Book 2 to Its Lineup

The Surface Book 2 will be "twice as powerful as the new MacBook Pro", said Yusuf Mehdi, the corporate vice president who oversees Windows and Device marketing.

The Surface Book 2 looks mostly similar to the original, with a removable tablet screen that has its own processor and battery that can be plugged into the keyboard facing either direction for even more performance and battery life. The 13in version is also available with a Core i5 processor - although this is limited to a seventh-generation version.

What's astonishing is that Microsoft is still claiming up to 17 hours of battery life, from both 13- and 15-inch models, when in laptop mode. Your only choice is 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of PCIe SSD storage.

The 13in will offer a Core i5 model but know that it is a 7th generation chip and it does not come with a discrete GPU.

We'll clearly need to fact-check all that, and take the "beautifully designed" 13 and 15-inchers for a spin in the real world shortly after their November 16 commercial rollouts. On the left side, there are two USB 3.0 ports and an SD card slot. The 13 inch model weighs 1.53 kilograms, the 15 inch model 1.91 kilos. The 15-inch model is nearly identical to the 13.5-inch model-it's got the same processors, battery life and graphics capabilities.

Microsoft says its new hardware is powerful enough to "fuel the next wave of computing across mixed reality, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and immersive gaming".

Microsoft introduced its new Surface Book 2 on Tuesday, and the company wasted no time comparing it to its biggest competitor: Apple's MacBook Pro lineup.

Microsoft has equipped the Surface Book 2 with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of memory for the top end variant. While Microsoft is generally known for its productivity offerings, it seems that the Microsoft Surface Book 2 is aimed just as much at gamers as it is at professionals. Apple's are slightly less expensive, with its least expensive MacBook Pro retailing for US$1299 and 15-inch models starting at US$1999 - although the prices go up when you start picking out options.

Two years later, the Surface Book 2 doesn't stray too far from its predecessor in terms of design, acknowledged Ryan Gavin, general manager of Surface Commercial at Microsoft. For tablet mode, users remove the display from the keyboard so that it becomes just a tablet, while for studio mode, users fold the laptop down and draw on it using the Surface Dial and Surface Pen.

The 15-inch Surface Book 2 features screen resolution of 3,240 x 2,160 pixels, with a pixel density of 260 PPI. Pre-orders for both devices will open November 9.

Pre-orders for the Surface Book 2 go live on the 9 of November in the U.S. as well as a few other select countries around the world. According to Microsoft, this laptop should support up to 17 hours of video playback in a single charge.
