Rugby Controversy Puts Macklemore's 'Same Love' #1 On Charts

With a music style in stark contrast to the rock and roll rugby league fans are used to, not to mention a song that directly advocates for same-sex marriage, some NRL fans are less than impressed with Macklemore's looming performance.

But the American performer has hit back, promising a significant funding boost for the country's "YES" campaign.

Conservative politicians and pundits are outraged that Macklemore plans to sing his pro-marriage equality anthem, Save Love, at Sunday's event.

Following a presentation at the Policy Exchange think tank in London overnight, Mr Dutton said two songs should be played at the NRL Grand Final, if USA rapper Macklemore is allowed to perform his pro-marriage equality song.

"It is one of his most popular songs, and for Mr Abbott or anyone else to say that it should be banned I think is a freakish thing to say".

Footy fans shouldn't be subjected to a politicised grand final.

"I want to donate my portion of the proceeds from Same Love that I get off of that record here in Australia to voting yes", he told Nine.

The performance comes amidst the same-sex marriage postal survey, and vigorous campaigning from both sides of the debate in Australia.

'I'm gonna go harder, ' he added.

Wall's petition demands that the NRL "reconsider its political position and remove LBGTIQ politics out of the awesome sport of Rugby League".

Ironically, the controversy helped the track move to the top of the iTunes chart in Australia this week.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull defended the NRL for the halftime act choice and also stood by Macklemore and his right to perform his playlist.

Currently, same-sex marriage is not legal but the government will use the results to make their decision on whether or not they will be holding a parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage later this year, according to Business Insider.

From now until November 7, every Australian who is eligible to vote has been invited to take part in a mail-in vote to measure what the public opinion on gay marriage is. "The NRL supports same-sex marriage what's the problem?"

Attorney-General George Brandis noted Same Love is one of the singer's chart- topping songs and one of four he will perform at the game in Sydney on Saturday.
