By winning a battle of hard-throwing bullpens, the Red Sox upped their AL East lead to a season-high 5 1/2 games over rival NY.

Mark Melancon, Hunter Strickland and Cory Gearrin each threw a scoreless inning of relief, while Bumgarner picked up his third win of the season.

The Denver native has been able to enjoy success despite only striking out 63 in 128 innings in part because he has kept the ball in the park (10 homers allowed).

Joey Gallo lined into an inning-ending double play with runners at second and third in the eighth against Ken Giles, who struck out two in the ninth for his 23rd save. Yes, already. The last time any player had as many as 15 home runs in August was 2003 (A-Rod).

He also tops the NL in slugging percentage and is in the top five of the league in runs scored, runs batting in and OPS. Pittsburgh managed just one hit after the first, and none in the final five innings. Stanton hit No. 42 on Sunday.

Rookie right-hander Jake Junis (5-2) was called up Monday from Omaha and allowed two runs on four hits over six innings for his third straight victory, including one in relief.

Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his 21st save.
