United signs Sweden defender Lindelof from Benfica

Lindelof is in line to become the second centre-back signed by United manager Jose Mourinho following last year's £30 million capture of Ivory Coast global Eric Bailly from Villarreal.

"The 22-year-old Swedish worldwide centre back is a versatile defender and will make his debut on the summer tour of the U.S. in July".

The 22-years-old, who is thought to have cost United £31 million ($39 million) excluding performance-related bonuses, is Jose Mourinho's first purchase of the summer.

Lindelof flew in this morning and is due to undergo an examination at the clubs AON complex.

According to the Daily Mail, Lindelof will fly to England after Sweden's global friendly fixture against Norway.

But Lindelof, who started his career with lowly Swedish club Vasteras before moving to Benfica in 2011, said he is willing to fight for his starting place.

United signed Rio Ferdinand for £29.3 million in 2002 and the English defender remained the club's most expensive defender until Jose Mourinho signed Ivorian Eric Bailly in 2016 for a sum of £30 million. The Benfica defender was very impressive during the 2016/17 campaign and drew attention from some of Europe's best clubs.

"I know he is hot on the market so let him make the right choice, what fits him good".

Lindelof has racked up 12 senior caps for Sweden and joins United on a four-year deal, with an option for a fifth. If reports are accurate, Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata is the next signing for Man United. I think I'm good with the ball. Although he didn't stay with them for too long, Lindelof did help his team get promoted into the second highest league in Sweden despite it being his debut season. "I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot there", the Sweden global said.
