The Rockies beat the Reds 12-6 Friday to improve to 27-16 on the season while leading the competitive National League West. Alexi Amarista led Colorado with three hits, a home run and four RBIs. The Rockies have the NL's best record at 28-17.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday, the Reds trailed the Rockies, 6-1.
Bud Black sees Kyle Freeland's swings during batting practice, so the Colorado manager wasn't surprised that the left-hander launched a 72 miles per hour slider into the right-field bullpen, especially on a day when the Rockies were, as Black said, feeling "hitterish".
"I think it's really amusing", Amarista said when asked about Black's reference to his hidden power. "That's one of the things we talked about this winter when we were putting the roster together". "This was a very good series for us". You can put him anywhere on the field and you feel good about his defense. Freeland wasn't at his best in this one; he walked four, struck out three and allowed his second homer of the year.
Freeland also doubled and hit his first major league homer off Arroyo (3-4), connecting on a 71 miles per hour pitch for a drive that carried over the wall in right field.
Tim Adleman added to Cincinnati's stretch of inadequate starts, giving up six runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Cincinnati's losing streak was its longest since it dropped 11 straight last May. Granted, the under is 7-1 in Freeland's last eight starts overall.
It was the first time a Rockie pitcher has hit a road home run since Kyle Kendrick (really?) did it in Septemeber of 2015. In his last start, he pitched six innings, allowing three runs and four hits to pick up his fourth victory against the Minnesota Twins. Facing the Reds for the first time in his career, Anderson is making his ninth start of the season. Reds manager Bryan Price has been forced to extend his starters and relievers beyond what he would normally to protect young arms. "Bonilla didn't have it". Because I know that sometimes the pitcher on the mound will take the pitcher (at the plate) for granted. Story has been hitting and fielding ground balls with no issues and appears fully recovered from a shoulder strain.
Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer visited the Reds' clubhouse as the invitation of pitcher Bronson Arroyo. His band is in town for a performance. He hadn't homered since April 25, a span of 73 at-bats. He'll play a few more games on his assignment. Catcher Stuart Turner went on the 10-day DL with a strained hamstring. The Reds' top starter has been sidelined since spring training because of a sore pitching elbow. He was treated for a cut below the eye and stayed in the game. The Reds returned home Thursday night after being swept by the Chicago Cubs in a three-game series at Wrigley Field in which they were outscored 24-15.
The Rockies rookie settled in nicely after that, throwing just six pitches in the third inning, the first clean frame for the Rockies pitching in their last 11 attempts.
