U.S. star Lexi Thompson fired a bogey-free six-under par 65 to stretch her lead to three strokes after Friday's second round of the LPGA Kingsmill Championship.
Thompson is playing in her third tournament since losing a playoff in the ANA Inspiration for being penalized four strokes for a rules violation spotted by a person watching the tournament on television.
Lee had a double bogey at the par-4 8th and bogey on the par-4 ninth before regaining her composure with three birdies on the back nine in a round of 70.
New Zealander Ko shares fifth place after opening with a four-under 67 at the Kingsmill Championship, leaving her two strokes behind American leader Lexi Thompson.
The two players who are breathing down Ko's neck for the No 1 ranking, So Yeon Ryu and Ariya Jutanugarn, are back in the pack; Ryu is at three-under par and Jutanugarn one-over par, with both players early in their second rounds. Lincicome finished with a 5-under-par 66.
Thompson, a 22-year-old Floridian, shot 32 on the front nine a day after shooting 30 in the opening round. The unusual entrance into the event was certainly an attention-getter for her Lexi Legacy Challenge charity, which raises funds and awareness for families of wounded and fallen United States Navy SEALs. She said she believes her game "is as good as anyone's" heading into the weekend.
I dont think I was hitting the ball fantastic, so there is a little bit of improvement to do there, Ko said.
Piller, who was in the same group with Thompson, had six birdies and a bogey. She will wear a commemorative Foundation pin for the remainder of the LPGA Tour season. "I tried to stay patient and made a lot of birdies".
"It's always good to get off to that kind of start and get comfortable", Piller said. "I just love the shape of the golf course". "Just excited for tomorrow".
One bogey, on the sixth hole, spoiled a round which featured five birdies.
"It's just a good golf course for me", she said. The greens are true and fast and some have a lot of undulations, too. "If you get above the hole you got to be really careful".
