We'll see if they can generate some buzz at Backlash and start to make their way back to the two-and-a-half million neighborhood they were comfortably living in before WrestleMania. We preview tonight's action.
-Randy Orton vs. Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship.
Kevin Owens 8/11 vs AJ Styles 8/11. Will this mainly be used in order to call out AJ Styles, Owens' opponent on Sunday? Giving Owens the Highlight Reel and allowing him to keep trolling Jericho until Jericho's eventual return is smart booking, but future segments better be more entertaining than that one.
Powell's POV: The build to WWE Backlash left a lot to be desired, particularly on the go-home show. The duo was involved in a No. 1 contender's tag team match against Enzo Amore and Big Cass. Sami says he is a threat to Corbin's ego, but Baron is a real threat, attack Zayn from behind and threatening to put him down permanently. SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon also announced the six women set to compete at Backlash. This has been proven by the alliance of Carmella, Natalya, and Tamina Snuka when they ganged up on Charlotte Flair and Naomi.
Ziggler has become known for making other WWE superstars look good in the ring, and he was probably pegged as Nakamura's first opponent for the sole goal of getting the Japanese wrestler over.
The Japanese star has been building up his feud with Dolph Ziggler since joining from NXT but it'll be interesting to see if there's a final twist tonight. Mahal showed footage of him pinning Orton last week.
Randy Orton 1/6 vs Jinder Mahal 7/2.
Right now, WWE is unsure on what they are wanting to do with Charlotte, whether she's a face or heel, but I'm under no impression that her "face" run on SD Live will last much longer. Might Jinder Mahal interfere? Can the WWE Champion notch a victory over Baron Corbin heading into Backlash or will "The Lone Wolf" prove that he deserves to be in the WWE Title picture? The Singh brothers try to launch a sneak attack, but Orton catches them. Orton hit a powerslam then hit a DDT off the second rope. JBL was even given a small group - the Cabinet -to protect him, similar to the Bollywood Boyz that Mahal has been using. Be sure to subscribe to my podcast In This Corner with Brian Campbell where we break down everything you need to know each week. Mahal hit his finisher to Orton to end the show.
