During the first quarter of 2017, the Apple iPhone 7 was titled as the best-selling smartphone, according to data from Strategy Analytics.

"Global smartphone shipments reached a robust 353.3 million units in first quarter of 2017".

Mawston pointed out that Oppo's previous flagship 4G model, the R9, was the world's sixth best-selling smartphone in the second quarter of past year. The phone launched back in October 2016 and comes with a 5.5-inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution and a Snapdragon 625 processor under the hood. Samsung's Galaxy J3 and J5 came in fourth and fifth, with the Galaxy Note 7 a notable absentee from the list due to the global recall a year ago due to safety concerns after some units caught fire. The iPhone 7 is by far the world's most popular smartphone model, due to a compelling blend of user-friendly design, extensive supporting apps, and widespread retail availability for the device. "The top-five most popular models together accounted for 1 in every 6 of all smartphones shipped worldwide during the quarter", Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, said.

"Huawei and Xiaomi have occasionally snuck a model into the top ten globally from 2014 to 2016, but have not been able to sustain their momentum", he said.

Mid-range smartphone segment in India has seen a major growth of over 158 percent in the previous year, thanks to many Chinese companies like Xiaomi, Oppo, Motorola and Lenovo, the mid-range segment is flooded with tons of smartphones.

Oppo, which was founded in 2001, is a subsidiary of privately held BBK Electronics, which also controls smartphone brands Vivo and OnePlus.

The Oppo R9s took out the number 3 spot on the global smartphone charts compiled by research firm Strategy Analytics, shipping 8.9 million units for the quarter ending March 31.

China-based OPPO Electronics' R9s smartphone was the third-most sold smartphone in the world over the cited period with 8.9 million units.
