LeGarrette Blount joins the Eagles on 1-year contract

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the veteran running back had offers from the Giants and the Cardinals before he chose to go to Philadelphia. After putting together an 18-touchdown season in 2016, though, the best offer out there for the free-agent running back was somewhere else. They also signed wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith.

The Patriots are expected to receive a compensatory draft pick for losing Blount.

That led him back to New England, where he once again filled a role as the team's bruising tailback and won a Super Bowl ring in 2015.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound back set career highs last season with 1,161 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns, but rushed for just 3.9 yards per carry, the second lowest mark of his seven-year National Football League career.

Blount was a workhorse for the Patriots last season, but he likely won't shoulder as much responsibility in Philadelphia.

Needing a running back who could turn successful short yard downs the Eagles went into the NFL Draft with their eyes set on Dalvin Cook. Some believed Quinn was just waiting to sign Blount, but obviously, that was not in his plans either. Despite their offseason additions and the faith I have in Carson Wentz, the Eagles are not on the same planet as the Patriots in terms of offensive production. "Corey is 220 pounds and he has good feet, so we're glad to add competition to that position".

Before past year, Blount's highest total of rushing touchdowns in a season was seven, and that came back in 2013.

With Smallwood and Sproles still on the roster and fourth-round pick Donnel Pumphrey champing at the bit for an opportunity, the Eagles can continue using a committee approach this season. If Blount scores 10 more rushing touchdowns, he can climb into the top 50 of all time.
